The Royal & Fortescue Hotel, Barnstaple, Devon (3 star)
Without question the most requested Itinerary for North Devon. The East Course at Saunton is commonly regarded as one of the top 50 courses in Britain, as surely anyone who has played it would agree.
The Club was founded in 1897 (incidentally, some three decades after Royal North Devon!) and after modest beginnings as a 9-hole course was extended to an 18-hole course prior to the First World War. After a battering during the Second World War, having been used as a "Battle School," the course was reconstructed in 1951. Once restored it quickly became one of Britain's leading championship links. In the early seventies a second 18-hole course was added, which is now known as the "West" Course. The "Old" Course was then renamed as the "East" Course.
Royal North Devon is the other great Links in the area and is truly steeped in the history of the game. Westward Ho! as it is commonly known, was the first English links course and being founded in 1864 the club lays claim to being the oldest English club still playing over its original land. Ilfracombe is quite unique, standing at top of cliffs, which face over the Bristol Channel towards Wales. A tough game of golf, especially if the wind is blowing!
Formerly a coaching inn, The Royal & Fortescue Hotel is an historic and traditional market town hotel, earning its present title after patronage by the late King Edward VII. Situated in the town centre, the Hotel offers all modern facilities while retaining its original charm and character.
