Golfing holidays and golf breaks in England.
Bath Golf Club Sham Castle, North Road, Bath, BA2 6JG
Laid out around 'Hampton Down', the Bath Golf Club occupies a prominent position on one of Bath's beautiful surrounding hills. The 18 hole, 6442 yard, par 71 course may not be the length that today's course designers seem to favour, but in the 1880's they knew how to create a challenge using the natural contours of a hilltop location steeped in history with stunning views that, on a clear day, stretch to the Welsh beacons.
The Course is full of variety and is laid out over fine "golfing country". Springy downland turf over shallow soil and limestone ensures rapid draining and the Course is usually found to be in superb condition. The greens present a special challenge being relatively small and containing hidden, and some not so hidden, borrows.
Holes of note include the long, par 4, stroke index 1, 5th and the even longer, par 5, 6th which vary dramatically depending on the wind. If prevailing from the west, you might be equal to the former but will struggle with the latter. If from the east the reverse applies. Ironically, if there is no wind you may well struggle with both! The 9th is probably the highest tee on the course and has the famous 'Wansdyke' earthworks to drive across. This and the 10th are fine golf holes especially when the white tees are at the back. The sanctuary of the clubhouse beckons when you have conquered the downhill, 410 yard, par 4 18th with a blind drive; a long straight 2nd shot followed by one of the courses most notorious greens.
