Dyke Golf Club

Devil's Dyke, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 8YJ

The Dyke Golf Club takes its name from the nearby 'Devil's Dyke', a ravine that almost links the inland 'Weald of Sussex' with the narrow coastal plain. Legend would have you believe that, the ravine was dug in a single night, by the Devil himself in an attempt to flood the Weald, thereby destroying the many churches whose spires can be seen from the peak of the South Downs. Fortunately, the lamp light of a local shepherd fooled him into thinking that dawn was breaking and he hastily abandoned his work.

Subsequently, in 1906, The Dyke Golf Course was formed high on the Sussex Downs, however the current layout is of more recent construction, the area having been used during World War II as a tank training ground which necessitated a complete rebuild after the war had ended.

The new course, designed by Fred Hawtree, is much longer than the original and is now a first class test of golf. As with most of the downland courses, the difficulty varies with the strength and direction of the wind, so that with a stiff sea-breeze blowing up from the English channel, the wide fairways are apt to prove difficult targets and the strategically placed bunkers all too easy to find.

At an elevation approaching 250 metres, the views are spectacular in all directions, especially on a clear day when the southern horizon out to sea is some 50km distant bringing the busy shipping lanes into view. The main attraction of the golf course is the layout with its contrast of long hard-hitting holes on the western side and the holes of a more adventurous type on the eastern side among which are three first class short holes. At most of the longer holes the fairways tend to draw slightly to one side or the other, adding to the difficulties and requiring additional accuracy on a windy day.
