Golfing holidays and golf breaks in England.
Formby Golf Club Golf Road, Formby, Merseyside, L37 1LQ
Voted No. 43 in the Golf Monthly/HSBC Top 120 UK Course Rankings - November 2006
Founded in 1884, Formby is a magnificent traditional links of charm and elegance situated close by the shoreline of the Irish sea, near Southport.
The course is located within the sandhills and pine woods of Formby, the natural terrain providing a memorable challenge to the golfer. Accuracy is always required since the indigenous heather protects much of the rough and great caution is required whether this be off the tee, in approach shots, or on the green. Then, there are the sloping fairways, firm fast greens, natural sand bunkers and great sandhills. Not surprisingly, it has a distinguished record for hosting many top amateur events, including the Amateur in 1984 when Jose-Maria Olazabal beat Colin Montgomerie in the final.
A visit will linger long in the memory, not simply for the superb golf links but for the surrounding sights and indeed scents of sea, sand and dunes. The wildlife and plants has made it a Site of Special Scientific interest, and the magnificent, fragile dunes a conservation area.
The traditional clubhouse offers you comfort and relaxation in its welcoming Golfers Bar and full catering is available on the first floor dining room with its magnificent views over the course.
