High Post Golf Club

Great Durnford, Salisbury, Wiltshire, SP4 6AT

Peter Allis rates High Post so highly he once said he would include the par 4 ninth hole on his 'Dream 18'. In 1997 Golf Monthly described the course as a 'hidden gem'.

The course is located on the southern reaches of Salisbury Plain and sits on the chalk downland that Wiltshire is famous for. Free draining, the course is playable year round with no temporary tees or greens. The quality of the turf is unsurpassed and although not long by modern standards, the layout of four par threes, two par fives and twelve par fours provides a very good test of golf.

Each hole is bordered by blackthorn or hawthorn bushes and the undulating fairways are generous enough albeit well bunkered, with a feature of the course being grass hollows that are both deep and well disguised.

The opening three holes are often played with the prevailing winds, producing a good start to the round, however, turning back into the wind on the second par five sixth hole your powers of concentration are about to be tested to the full.

The par threes are particularly strong holes with the 153 yard uphill 11th hole varying in club selection by anything from a short iron to a wood depending on the wind direction, although both are the exception rather than the rule.

The closing three holes are as tough a finish as you will find for many a mile, the 16th green is raised some 30 feet above the level of the fairway and even a good long iron is likely to fall short as it plays every one of its 439 yards. The 17th is the longest of the par threes, an uphill tee shot; often into the prevailing wind should find the generously large green but a birdie putt is far from certain. The final hole demands you stick to the short stuff as the rough either side of the fairway can be extremely punishing, the undulating green set into the corner of the course can be difficult to hit in two with bunkers and hollows ready to receive an errant shot.

The 19th is waiting for you across the road and over a welcoming beverage most golfers will appreciate they have experienced a tough but fair examination of their golfing ability.

High Post's great strength is it's all year round playability. The free draining chalk downland enables golfers to enjoy summer greens and tees even in the depths of winter. Even if your golf is not quite up to scratch, come along to admire the stunning views across the famous Salisbury Plain.
