Golfing holidays and golf breaks in England.
Isle of Purbeck Golf Club Studland, Dorset, BH19 3AB
Voted No. 62 in the Golf Monthly/HSBC Top 120 UK Course Rankings - November 2006
A visit here is a must for all golfers; the beginner is catered for on the 9 hole Dene course and the Purbeck Championship Course proves an exciting test for even the most accomplished golfer. The courses are built on heathland and set in a Nature Reserve where many rare plants can be seen as well as rare birds - including the Dartford Warbler.
The Club dates back to 1892 and among the past owners, who were responsible for the extension to 27 hole, were Enid Blyton, the legendary writer of childrens books, and her husband, Dr Darrell-Waters.
The Purbeck course is well manicured and abounds with heather and gorse - with incredible views at every hole - looking out over Poole Harbour, Bournemouth, the Solent and the Isle of Wight. The gentler Dene has views of Poole but also the 9th overlooks a wonderful valley with Swanage nestling at the bottom.
The golf is a true test and the ambience of the clubhouse - "the 19th" is excellent. The Bar is open all day, and as well as drinks, serves bar snacks and sandwiches. The restaurant has a well deserved reputation for excellent fare and very good value.
This is a fine place to enjoy a leisurely round of golf, particularly in the summer when the weather is great and temperatures can soar to rival those enjoyed by many places in the Continent.
