Littlehampton Golf Course

170 Rope Walk, Riverside West, Littlehampton, West Sussex, BN17 5DL

At just 6226 yards from the medal tees first-time visitors to Littlehampton may be fooled into thinking they can expect to score low at this short seaside links. However, one look at the scores for the scratch club championship show the reality is something altogether different.

Littlehampton was laid out by Hawtree and Taylor over one hundred years ago and is classic links, with a twist. The course is almost triangular bounded by the yacht harbour and the River Arun to the west, a high line of dunes to the south and mature trees and farmland beyond to the west - giving a few of the holes a parkland feel.

Sir Peter Allen in his classic 1973 book 'Play the best golf courses' says of the 1st hole "It's such a good hole it's a pity it doesn't come at a more critical moment; it would make an excellent 17th and 18th". However, don't be fooled, whilst the 1st is difficult, the final two holes are superb tests. The 17th - a par 5 - plays back towards the sea with heavy rough (doubtless knee high and impossible to get out of in summer) and good pot bunkers further up will catch the wild tee and second shots of those looking to get up into two. The green is full of subtle slopes and par is not a bad score. The 18th which runs back to the clubhouse measures 404 yards is a wonderful closing hole. A big drive is needed to avoid a large fairway bunker to the right and set up an approach to the long and narrow green which is guarded by a tiny entrance and two deep bunkers either side of it.

Spacious locker rooms, a large bar and dining room on the first floor over looking the course and a top quality snooker room cosset you after a battering at the hands of the wind outside!
