Golfing holidays and golf breaks in England.
Minchinhampton New Golf Club Minchinhampton, Stroud, Gloucestershire, GL6 9BE
The two new courses at Minchinhampton Golf Club, Avening and Cherington, are situated to the east of Minchinhampton, on the road to Avening and provide testing golf, be it on the Avening Course with its park land style, or on the Cherington which has more of a links feel about it. Here, one course is designated as a two ball course and the other a three/four ball course on any particular day. This way, golf proceeds apace with little hold up or need for "calling through".
Avening Course
6263 yards long - par 70
Opened in the early 70s, this course has a wide variety of holes in a park land setting with many copses and a large variety of trees resulting in an extremely scenic as well as testing round of golf. Water comes into play at two of the short holes, the 10th and 13th, whilst the downhill 6th requires a particularly delicate touch to avoid the pot bunkers set either side of the green. In contrast, the sweeping 528 yards of the 8th needs accuracy coupled with three solid blows. The dogleg 415 yard 15th is a challenge where only a good drive will position you to see the green. Peaceful valleys and mellow stone villages present an idyllic setting for this mature course with its three par 5s and five par 3s.
Cherington Course
6430 yards - par 71
Built in the early 90s, this undulating upland course with its many grassy mounds reminds you of some of those typical "Open Championship" courses used for the big event in July. The large contoured greens are guaranteed to challenge even the most proficient putter and the seemingly ever present breeze, together with the mixture of grass and sand pot bunkers, provide an additional test of skill. Starting alongside the Avening first tee, the long curving 527 yard first hole quickly gets you into your stride; length and accuracy being the requirement to achieve a par. Quickly moving away from the club house, the scenery changes after the second hole and a splendid Cotswold vista opens up disclosing a golf course that stretches as far as you can see. Continuing to play away from base, a wonderful mix of differing holes, backed by farm and woodland, reveal themselves. Traditional dry stone walls draw the eye and provide the finishing touches to a magnificent course.
