Moortown Golf Club Harrogate Road, Alwoodley Road, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS17 7DB
Voted No. 55 in the Golf Monthly/HSBC Top 120 UK Course Rankings - November 2006
Moortown has always held a richly deserved reputation as one of the country's finest Championship Golf courses. Originally designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, Moortown is set in 175 acres of dramatically contrasting mainly level woodland and moorland.
Moortown measures almost 6,500 yards from the regular tees, but accuracy will reap more rewards than length. Whilst the fairways appear to be wide, it's an optical illusion and the rough can be punishing. Moortown opens with two back-to-back par fives and these are both relatively short so make the most of two great birdie opportunities. The 3rd is a testing par, one of six par fours at Moortown measuring in excess of 400 yards. The 10th is MacKenzie's signature hole, a cracking 158-yard par three called 'Gibraltar', with its sloping plateau green.
Typical of all great courses there is a classic finish. With its fairway favouring strategically placed bunkers, the 18th requires two exceptional shots to find the well-guarded green which nestles under the Clubhouse windows.
