Golfing holidays and golf breaks in England.
Ormskirk Golf Club Cranes Lane, Lathom, Ormskirk, Lancashire, L40 5UJ
To visit Ormskirk is both a memorable golfing experience and a step back in time. The course was created in Lathom Park, the scene of some of the fiercest fighting of the English Civil Wars. Indeed a hollow on the left of the 16th is believed to have been an emplacement for a battery of Cromwell's forces and nearby Lathom House was the scene of one of the greatest sieges of those turbulent times.
The grand clubhouse stands where the King's deer once roamed. The well-hit drives soar over the remains of a supposedly mediaeval castle and the visitors arriving by car may travel the old route beyond an ancient Cistercian monastery. Ormskirk is now more than 100 years old and many great players have walked these fairways, from the years of Harold Hilton, John Ball, James Braid and J.H. Taylor to the times of Roberto de Vicenzo, Dale Hayes and Curtis Strange.
With tight fairways, well-guarded greens and water features it also provides the kind of demanding golf challenge which has made it a regular venue for Lancashire county matches and a choice as a regional qualifying venue for the Open. Set in the peaceful West Lancashire countryside and with a friendly atmosphere, Ormskirk will give the golfer an enjoyable day. For those who arrive from the challenges of the links land on the coast it is a delightful change too - welcome too if the wind blows strong on the coast.
