Royal St George's (also known affectionately as Sandwich) is one of the great links courses of British golf. It has played host to many famous Opens through the years and has produced a number of memorable winners, including Greg Norman and Sandy Lyle. But the Sandwich course produced one of the biggest shocks in the history of golf when it hosted the Open in 2003 where a complete unknown by the name of Ben Curtis - he, too, ironically from Kent - came, conquered and then went home with the Claret Jug.

This course is the truest links you will find in all England and the Royal & Ancient, in its wisdom, chose this as one of The Open venues, knowing it will find the pedigree player at the end of a week. Close to the sea, overlooking Pegwell Bay, any kind of wind can make this man size test even tougher.

The test may be fierce and the fairways can be extremely fast when it's sunny, but there is something incredibly enduring about Royal St George's. No matter how difficult, it has an appeal like no other.

NB

1) Tuesday is the only day three and fourballs are permitted to play. A two-ball format is played on all other days.

2) Maximum handicap of 18 for Ladies and Gents (this can be relaxed slightly for larger groups provided course etiquette is upheld) .
