Royal Birkdale Golf Club

Waterloo Road, Southport, Merseyside, PR8 2LX

Voted No. 7 in the Golf Monthly/HSBC
Top 120 UK Course Rankings - November 2006

Royal Birkdale is truly one of golf's greatest courses and biggest names and it is a genuine privilege to be given the opportunity to play it. Royal Birkdale has been voted the No 1 course in Britain, and is among the best in the world.

The club was simply known as Birkdale until 1951 when King George VI bestowed the royal charter on the club. Royal Birkdale has hosted all the important events - the Ryder Cup, Walker Cup, Curtis Cup, Ladies British Open Championship. The British Open Championship has been hosted at Birkdale no fewer than eight times.

It is a magnificent links and widely recognised for its fairness. If you hit the fairways, rarely will the ball be thrown off course. The fairways are laid out in the flat-bottomed valleys between the towering dunes, which, in turn, provide superb viewing platforms. Invariably in immaculate condition, Royal Birkdale is a very tough golf course to master. The greens were re-built prior to the 1998 Open and despite their youth, are extremely difficult to read.

Birkdale has a abundance of great golf holes, three of which have been selected and featured in the book, the 500 World's Greatest Golf Holes. Fittingly, there is a par three and a par four, both of which are rated in the best 100 holes, as well as, a par five. The par three 12th is also featured in the book, Classic Golf Holes. The par 3 12th is played to a plateau green. There is little margin for error as there are bunkers on either side of the green and sand-hills covered in scrub tower over either side. The par 5 15th is a golf hole of the highest class and the longest on the course. There are 13 bunkers to be negotiated on this long and narrow hole. The par 4 18th is one of the most famous finishing holes in the country with three bunkers guarding the green, affording a narrow entrance to the putting surface.

Visitors to Royal Birkdale are assured a warm welcome.
