Silloth on Solway Golf Club Silloth, Cumbria, CA7 4BL
Voted No. 31 in the Golf Monthly/HSBC Top 120 UK Course Rankings - November 2006
Situated on the north west coast of Cumbria, Silloth on Solway Golf Club is blessed with stunning views of the Galloway Hills to the north, and south to the Lakeland fells and the distant Isle of Man. The Championship links of over 6,600 yards has been laid out over the sand-hills west of town, touched by some of the great classical golf architects, but mostly moulded by Nature herself. The links is currently one of the R & A Regional Qualifying Courses for the Open.
Hazards consist of heather and bent; whin and broom; heroic bunkers and sandy wastes. Fairways are always wider than they seem from the tee, and having been laid with springy Cumberland turf, invite courageous fairway woods and crisp iron shots. Greens are subtle, firm, fast, and deadly true. The par three ninth, Silloth's version of the Postage Stamp, is extremely challenging with deep bunkers guarding the green from the elevated tee.
Challenges met, visitors can enjoy the busy and atmospheric clubhouse, a meal made with local produce; a wine or beer from the selection at Bar where there is usually also a guest beer, and above all, a warm Cumbrian welcome. Unsurprising that Silloth on Solway ranks within Golf World's top fifty UK courses and is at the very top of the list in terms of customer value.
