Stoneham Golf Club Monks Wood Close, Bassett, Southampton, Hampshire, SO16 3TT
Just a few short miles outside of Southampton you will find a large and challenging little course hidden behind the doors of Stoneham Golf Club. It is laid out on some truly splendid parkland turf that is springy, verdant and surrounded by some aesthetically wonderful but potentially punishing wooded areas. The key to scoring well here? Accuracy, good course management, wise club selection and keeping your temper.
Willie Park laid out the original course in a deer park a mere three miles from the centre of Southampton, yet its hilly nature and the depth of its gorse and heather come as a pleasant surprise to most visitors. Stoneham is one of a select band of courses, of which it can be said that there is not an uninteresting hole in the round. It looks short on paper, only 6387 yards from the back tees and with a par of 72, but it certainly does not play short. Many of the approach shots here are uncompromising - you simply must make it onto the putting surface or face some serious recovery work.
Of the long par- 4s the 4th is exhilarating, driving out over heather before plunging steeply downhill. A stream crossing 90 yards short of the green is of concern to most golfers. The 11th involves a sizeable carry over a cross-bunker from the tee followed by an uncompromising approach over a deep gully to a green perched on a ledge on the far side.
