Wallasey Golf Club Bayswater Road, Wallasey, Wirral, CH45 8LA
Located on the tip of the Wirral Peninsula. Wallasey Golf Club is one of the oldest clubs on the North West coast line being founded in 1891 - the course, with it's undulating fairways set amongst spectacular dunes, was originally designed by Tom Morris Snr of St Andrews, four times Open champion.
Dr Frank Stableford joined Wallasey Golf Club in 1914 and his handicap moved from plus 1 to 8 by 1928. It was not until late in 1931, whilst playing the second hole into the wind, for most still unreachable in 2, that he mused how often players tore up their cards in the first few holes and wondered what could be done about it. The result, after some development was the Stableford scoring system.
The opening five holes are engaging and immense fun, with several raised plateau greens and elevated tees. Long, straight driving is key to scoring well, because Wallasey is a lengthy challenge, measuring more than 6,500 yards from the back tees. This, however, is made all the more difficult by the strong sea breezes blowing in from the Irish Sea.
Wallasey will host Open Championship Qualifying when the Open returns to Royal Liverpool in 2006, although it is unlikely that anyone will repeat Bobby Jones's amazing feat. In 1930, Jones came through Open Championship qualifying at Wallasey and went on to win the Open at Hoylake.
