Golfing holidays and golf breaks in Ireland.
Knockanally Golf Club Ovidstown, Donadea, Naas, Co. Kildare, Ireland
Founded in 1985, this championship golf course stands on 125 acres of parkland with many water hazards and stately, mature trees all around and is about a 40 minute drive from Dublin's city centre. Housed in a 19th century Palladian mansion, the clubhouse commands panoramic views of the 6, 424-yard course.
Interestingly, its owner, Noel Lyons, designed the course. It has hosted the Irish International Professional Matchplay Championship and the Irish Club Professional Championship. According to Christy O'Connor Snr, it has the most difficult opening hole in Irish golf.
The course was built in 1985 and runs a route through woodlands bringing water into play on seven holes. One of the most attractive is the par three 11th which is beautifully set amidst overhanging trees and protected front and right side by water.
The toughest hole and most certainly the card wrecker is the 424-yard dogleg fifth, with water to the left of the green. Only the most accurate of shots will avoid a swift watery grave.
