Pinheiros Altos Golf Course
Pinheiros Altos is established as one of the most prestigious and successful premier golf and leisure resorts in Europe. The original 18 holes were designed by the respected American architect Ronald Fream and the additional 9 holes, created by the highly regarded Portuguese golf architect George Santana da Silva, opened in 2007.
The now 27 hole Championship Pinheiros Altos Golf is presented in three contrasting nine hole formats. Each nine holes is a PAR 36 and named:
The Pines (Pinheiros) - The Pines Course is named after the abundance of pine trees which abound the course, this nine includes four of the new holes opened in January 2007 and five of the original front nine. One thousand additional pine trees have been planted to blend the new with old. The Pines signature hole is the ninth, a beautiful Par 3 over a valley to a McKenzie green while the par 5 fourth hole is the epitome of 'risk and reward' golf course design. The view of the green over the water and within reach for many golfers is just too much of a temptation to resist and often results in a watery grave for your golf ball!
The Corks (Sobreiros) - The Corks Course is the longer of the three nine holes at Pinheiros Altos and regarded as the most demanding. Like the Pines Course, the Corks Course is a mixture of the original and new holes with spectacular views of the Ludo valley and the Goldra hills beyond. The first tee shot when playing the Corks Course is one of the most demanding in the Algarve but the view from there is some form of consolation. Many regard the eighth hole, a Par 5 double dog leg of 580 yards as the most dangerous on the course and responsible for the destruction of many medal rounds.
The Olives (Oliveiras) - The Olives Course group formed the original back nine and has remained unchanged since the island green eighth hole was constructed in 1995. The eighth hole has become the signature hole of Pinheiros Altos and a must play hole when visiting the Algarve. Much of the bird life associated with Pinheiros Altos is visible on this nine. The gentle rolling landscape of the Olives course and the way the holes meander between lakes make for a most tranquil if demanding golfing setting.
The firm, fast and testing greens, sown with Pentcross Bent and combined with the Bermuda fairway grass, provide resilient and excellent surfaces on which to play golf and make Pinheiros Altos a must play course when visiting the Algarve.
