Victoria Golf Course, Vilamoura
Arnold Palmer's most recent project in Europe, the Victoria Course is destined to become one of the best and most sophisticated golf courses around.
Laid out on virtually flat terrain covering some 90 hectares it includes a series of constructed mounds specially landscaped to emulate the outline of inland hills on the horizon - a feature that enriches the course with a sense of movement and harmony.
One extraordinary fact concerning Victoria is that Palmer masterly created 18 greens with totally different shapes and sizes. The Victoria Course is laid out in amongst no fewer than 22 lakes totalling about 11 hectares and interconnected by several waterfall features, which give it great character. The 17th is the Victoria Course's signature hole. It is a 509-metre par-5, and the hole has a total of twelve water cascades bordering the right hand side of the fairway. In addition. drives and second shots here need to negotiate some fairway bunkers, leaving a very demanding approach shot over water to the raised green.
This is at present the longest 18 hole golf course in Portugal and promises to be a notable course in Europe. The series of beautiful lakes and waterfalls also helps to provide an attractive background whilst playing the course.
