Belleisle Golf Club Doonfoot Road, Ayr, Ayrshire, KA7 4DU
Situated within the Belleisle Estate with spectacular views over Arran, the course was founded in 1927 and is the work of James Braid. Indeed, far from simply bowing to the increasing demand for another course, Braid ensured this creation would boast natural features and blend into the local landscape.
He fashioned 18 holes of genuine character that were as much adored in 1927 as there are now. There are only two par fours under 400 yards and a closing hole of 532 yards where you must play across a burn, negotiate a dog leg while incorporating a steep gully to finish.
Belleisle is unique in that it opens with back-to-back par fives, but every hole is a distinct challenge. Hundreds of beech trees line the wide fairways, and there are wonderful views of the Isle of Arran from the sixth and seventh holes.
