This undulating parkland course is undoubtedly one of the best parkland courses in Scotland. It is a previous host of the Scottish Amateur and Professional Championships, but it was the hosting of the 1999 Open Championship qualifying that really brought it into the golfing limelight. Downfield is again hosting Final qualifying for The Open in 2007.
It is an attractive looking course with the Gelly Burn coming into play on a selection of holes. The par five, 11th, with a pond and a stream at the front of the green, is a tough test. Big hitters can either lay-up, or, go for the green and risk a watery grave.
This is a wonderful golf course, which is at its best from June onwards when the course has had a bit of growth. Its quality and the kind of test it provides are best summarized by the great Peter Thomson when he remarked that Downfield was "One of the finest inland courses I have played anywhere in the world. It's a tough, demanding test of golf amidst some of the most picturesque scenery and you need to drive very long and very straight to have any chance of success here".
