Prestwick Golf Club 2 Links Road, Prestwick, Ayrshire, KA9 1QG
Voted No. 34 - Golf World Top 100 UK Golf Courses 2008
The Ayrshire course holds a special place in the golfing history books, having been the venue for the first-ever Open Championship back in 1860. It last staged an Open in 1925 but the Americans in particular love Prestwick and its often unique test of golf.
Protected by the meandering waters of "Pow Burn", Prestwick boasts a unique array of holes with significant amounts of heather and gorse, which when combined with some typically hellish Scottish bunkers can often ruin an otherwise respectable score. Prestwick's fairways are for the most part narrow and its generally small and undulating greens, given certain pin placements, can make for some interesting approach shots. While Prestwick can be forgiving on calm days, when the wind rolls in from the Firth of Clyde, the golfer would be well advised to lower their aspirations to a low score.
The first tee sits beside Prestwick Station and the railway line runs all the way down the right-hand side of the opening hole. There are plenty of other holes where a score can come off the tracks, though, the huge 'Cardinal Bunker' providing potential trouble at the third and the 'Himalayas' having to be negotiated at the 206-yard par-3 fifth.
Prestwick Golf Club is a relaxed and friendly club that enjoys hosting golfers from all around the World. Visitors are encouraged to use their temporary membership to its full capacity, and enjoy the full lunch in the lavish Dining room or just a snack in the relaxed Cardinal room.
