Golfing holidays and golf breaks in Scotland.
Torrance Course, Fairmont St Andrews St Andrews, Fife, KY16 8PN
The Torrance Course is one of two courses that are part of the Fairmont St Andrews Resort and officially opened in October 2001. A traditional Scottish layout, the Torrance was created with the vision and expertise of Sam Torrance (winning Ryder Cup Captain 2004) and the legendary Gene Sarazen. It has been designed using the principles of links golf with an infusion of new styles. The natural contours of the land and the dramatic coastal setting are combined with a unique blend of Rye grass and innovative green-keeping skills.
Immediately the game begins by testing the golfer with challenging bunkers, undulating fairways and greens, and the occasional meandering stream making precision and club selection paramount. As the course advances it works its way around the imposing structure of the hotel before bursting open to reveal a cross section of the remaining twelve holes down towards the cliff edge and all the while framed by the powerful canvass of the St Andrews skyline.
The deceptive back nine creates uncertainty for the golfer with holes such as the tricky par 3, 15th with the green surrounded by a protective dry stone wall and steep sloping edges leading to deep, sunken bunkers. The 17th, Sam's favorite, is a tricky par 4 with out of bounds running parallel with the coastal trail down the right hand side before cutting sharply across in front of the green. With strong winds, and from its exposed position, this hole can make or break your score.
At 7039 yards, this par 72 is a walking course only. The Torrance offers a challenging round and with its links style characteristics, yet unconventional layout, provides a welcome edition to the array of golf courses available within this East corner of Scotland.
