Golfing holidays and golf breaks in Wales.
Blaen-Y-Coed Road, Carmarthen, Dyfed, SA33 6EH
Three miles or so up the Gwili Valley from Carmarthen, amid some of the choicest Welsh countryside, the town's golf club has considerably enhanced its outlook by building another storey on top of the clubhouse. The result is a magnificent lounge and dining room with clear views over even more stunning scenery.
When the club was first formed in 1907, members played near the centre of Carmarthen, then the capital of Carmarthenshire. In 1928 the club move north to a new course designed by J.H. Taylor at Rhydymarchog, a rural delight. Carmarthen is a much stiffer challenge that it length would suggest. The first, a long and difficult uphill par four, sets the tone for a parkland course that is rarely conquered by first time visitors. The dog-legged 17th with its two tier green ambushes many who think they have. It is the fast and trick greens in general that re the key to its defences.
Few manage to break 70 here - perhaps they've improved the view from the bar as a consolation to all who try.
